Five Strategies for Leaders to Inspire

Good leadership isn't just about management and strategic thinking; it also involves inspiring your team to reach their potential and beyond. The task of inspiring others, particularly in a leadership context, can often feel daunting for several reasons.  Fear is core to this – fear of vulnerability, fear of failure, and fear of the pressure of having to maintain a level of inspiration, all of which lead to fear of trying.  Then leaders may feel uncertain about their ability to inspire others, or not have a sufficiently clear vision themselves, making it hard to be convincing.

But, fear not!  There are some strategies to help with this:

1. Articulate a Clear Vision.  A compelling vision provides your team with a
common goal and something bigger to strive towards. When defining your vision, make sure it's inclusive, achievable, and aligns with your company’s values. Be sure to communicate this vision consistently, clearly, and passionately.

2. Lead by Example.  Your team looks to you to set the standard. Show up on time, meet your deadlines, and uphold the organisation's values. Your actions should embody the culture you want to see in your team. Demonstrating passion, commitment, and high standards in your work will inspire others.

3. Empower and Trust Your Team.  Empowerment promotes autonomy, creativity, and initiative. Encourage your team to take ownership of their tasks, make decisions, and learn from their experiences. Show trust in their abilities and judgement. This boosts confidence and motivation, fostering a culture of
innovation and growth.

4. Foster Open Communication.  Encourage a culture of open, transparent, and respectful communication. When your team feels comfortable expressing ideas, concerns, and feedback, they will feel more engaged and committed. Regular team meetings, one-on-one sessions, and open-door policies are excellent ways to ensure everyone feels heard.

5. Recognise and Appreciate Efforts.  Recognition and appreciation are powerful motivators. Celebrate team and individual achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Personalise your appreciation and make it public when appropriate. When your team knows that their work is valued, they will be more inspired to contribute their best.

Great leaders inspire their teams not just through their words, but more importantly, through their actions. You CAN do it.

Good luck!

Leadership Succession

I try to meet with, virtually or in person, lots of my business and coaching contacts, and I find this an effective way of keeping up to date with the latest relevant issues. It also helps to ‘ground’ me and encourage me to check in with my own work and approach. Along the way I have lots of discussions about leadership which inevitably entails wildly differing views and opinions.

WFH and the Leadership Gap:  A Corporate Time-bomb?

06 March 2025

Out of the proliferation of remote work during and after COVID, a new challenge for organisations has emerged: many important skills are not easily, or cannot be, nurtured through screens. In the traditional office environment, the subtle yet powerful process of learning osmotically plays a critical role. Leaders model behaviours, and employees, often subconsciously, absorb crucial skills such as adaptability, emotional intelligence, and intuitive decision-making.  Even resilience can be enhanced through witnessing other people’s coping mechanisms.

Reflecting on what I feel makes a leader truly great, I realise that leadership is generally misunderstood. It should not be about rank or authority;
